The Zodiac and its Meanings

We like to have fun with what we do and over the past few years, our monthly graphics and blogs have all been based around a central theme, have you caught on to that?

Well if you haven’t check out our past blogs on BirthstonesBirthflowers, and Lunar PhasesBut this year, we are letting our secret out early so you can follow along. The theme for 2023 is Zodiac and Astrological signs!

So what are the meanings behind each astrological sign and what is the zodiac calendar all about? Well, you’re just gonna have to do some deep reading in this Headed West Blog – The Zodiac and its meanings!

The 12 Zodiac Signs – History (kinda)

If you didn’t know already, there are 12 Zodiac Signs and these signs are all based on different constellations in the sky…well not in the sky, but space. Seen from earth’s perspective, you know what we mean!

The origin of astrology and the Zodiac signs dates back to Mesopotamia/Egypt around 3000 BCE. This is when ancient astrologers would just look up and see different shapes and patterns in the stars.

Truthfully they kinda just started to say “Hey, that looks like a crab, write that down and tell the others!” or “That looks like a giant lion!” (you know when you are looking at Devil’s Head mountain and it kinda looks like a sleeping man? yeah it’s basically like that)

But anyways, over time these ancient astrologers noted that when the movements and position of the stars changed, it would have a direct influence on people and how they acted. They probably said something like “look at these crazy people, wonder if it has to do with how the stars aligned…like last year.”

Over time (like thousands of years) they noted that people were using it to predict the future, saw how they affected people, and they all just kinda started to agree with each other.

After a little bit of arguing and coming to agreements, these astrologers started to assign meanings and characteristics to these constellations and really based a lot of it on mythology.

Moving now into the 4th century BCE. That’s when the ancient Greeks really put the whole zodiac thing into full force with their mythology and not much has really changed to this day. In fact, the concept and understanding of Zodiacs and how they affect people are almost entirely based on this era.

Of course, we have really modernized it and shaped it quite a bit over the past thousands of years, but that is the backstory!

If you don’t want this oversimplified explanation then we suggest checking this out.

The Zodiac Calandar

The Zodiac Calandar –

The 12 Zodiac signs are based on 12 different segments. These segments were created by the position of the sun relative to the constellations during the person’s time of birth. The exact dates are based on where the sun is relative to the constellation.

Basically, when you are born and depending on where the sun is, that’s your sign! Ancient Astrologers thought that this provided valuable insights into people’s personalities, paths, and potential futures!

The Stars are RAD af!

What’s really interesting is we can all find something in each Zodiac that resonates with us and we can all agree that humans are wild! Like, we did this, we came up with a system to figure out how people act based on the sun, stars, and the rock we all live on.

Just keep in mind that astrology is not a science and there is no hard evidence to support that just because you were born on February 19th means you are sensitive.

Remember to have fun with it, learn more, dive into research, and don’t just base your entire existence on a list!
