Perks!
In 1994 I bought my first waterpipe to commemorate my 18th birthday. It was a purple Graffix tube with a yellow “piggy-back”, which was essentially an ash catcher that worked as an external perk. I drove from Ft. Collins to Colorado Springs to make my big purchase which I named Acacia after the local skate park. I have many great memories associated with that tube. Unfortunately Acacia met its end when my roommate, Squirrel, broke it one day while I was at work.
Fast forward twenty or so years and I am now working in a headshop that has an amazing selection of smoking accessories. While every now and again I really enjoy smoking a hand rolled cigarette, or a fresh bowl packed in a glass pipe, my preference is always a water piece. Especially with the evolution of waterpipes, dab riggz, and bubblers over the past few years. New technology and the implementation of scientific percolation in water pieces has made the smoking experience for many of us a cooler, cleaner one.
After investing in a sweet HBG tube a couple of years back I realized that awesome percolation can have a downside as well. The perks can be a gathering place for icky resin and other organic materials to collect making cleaning a real challenge. In fact in some instances the openings in the perks can become clogged ruining part of the functionality of the perk itself. Now I know you may be thinking that perhaps I am a lazy smoker who doesn’t clean her glass regularly, or that my cleaning methods are shotty. Let me reassure you I am a clean freak in fact almost a little ocd at times. However, I admit that I have experienced losing a battle against resin lodged in a perk regardless of my efforts.
So when I was introduced to RezBlock by 420 Science I was intrigued by the fact that this natural enzyme solution could be a potential ally in keeping my tube functioning properly. The idea is that the solution mixes into the water that you fill your piece with and it helps prevent the resin from sticking while you smoke. Each time you change your water out most of the gunk goes with it leaving very little work left to do for cleaning. The newer product is a concentrate (the old solution needed to be refrigerated after opening which many of us stoners would forget to do) and it only takes a few drops to make the difference. It sounds weird leaving it in the water while you smoke but it does not have a taste, is non-toxic, and besides the pinkish hue it gives the water it is basically unnoticeable.
It is a personal mission I have to not sell any waterpipes with perks without helping to educate customers on RezBlock. It is not an upsell; in fact many people buy less cleaning solutions in the long run because warm water is often all that is needed for cleaning pieces that routinely have RezBlock in them. My hope it that the recommendation to try RezBlock helps our customers avoid wrecked perks and keeps their pieces functioning properly.
