What do “sustainable” and “eco friendly” mean? In Fashionista’s April 2012 issue, Pratt Institute’s teacher of sustainable design, Rachel Miller, described many of the variables: “It could be about preserving the environment, it could be about ethics and fair wages, it could be a designer that has an interest in designing with organic materials, or it may be recycling what’s already there, using recycled materials to create something new.”
At Headed West, we care about the Earth and love the friends with whom we share it. So it makes sense that we support a number of clothing lines that meet many of the criteria described by Ms. Miller.

Ixchel: Music-inspired wholesaler whose products are made in a worker managed facility in an indigenous village in the Guatemalan highlands. Full compliance with the International Fair Trade Code of Practice.
Blue Sky: Bohemian flare for women. Earth friendly production and Fair Trade business practices.
Jayli: Started out by selling hippie clothing at Grateful Dead concerts. Pays workers above the standard rate in their native Nepal.
Kind Dub: Group of independent musicians, artists, students, and entrepreneurs focused on supporting local businesses, artists, and community.
Jedzebel: Sustainable, ethically produced clothing where portion of sales is allocated to food and school programs for the street children of Pushkar, India.
Gypsy Rose: Purveyors of peaceful products. Organized co-ops in Ecuador and Nepal hand-make most wool & crochet products.
